Revolutionising NMR
By achieving single-spin nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) detection via electron spin resonance (ESR)–scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), Manassen et al. bridge a key gap in 4D-NMR’s vision of single-molecule magnetic resonance microscopy. This major step was achieved by monitoring intensity modulations of a selected hyperfine line in the ESR spectrum. The technique demonstrated that it is possible to retrieve NMR spectra with chemical shift resolution from individual molecules, including non-radicals. This proof-of-concept enables simultaneous STM imaging and nuclear identification at the molecular scale—advancing core goals of the 4D-NMR project.
